The watchmaking paradox: please share your thoughts!
Dear all,
I just attended the GPHG ceremony in Geneva, great display of the industry’s best talents, with most winner’s speeches celebrating craftsmanship and artisans…
Yet we know that hype / brand recognition drive a lot of “buying impulse” .
So here is my question: assuming you like the design equally and the price point is the same theoretical 10k: would you rather go for a watch with 0 brand recognition but amazing execution / finishing on par with a model costing several multiples more, or for a watch with “decent but not amazing” finishing but high brand recognition / strong history ?
I know what I’d choose, but curious to hear your views!

I heavily skew towards amazing execution over hype
But the one thing that gives me pause is future service-ability. I would probably still buy a crazy one-man indie watch though if I really loved it, but knowing there is a chance I’m going to have to do some serious legwork to find a master watchmaker to ...
The main question is how important finishing is
Remy Coools watch is nice, but what does it add to the watchmaking? It's another time only tourbillon watch. With less money I'd buy the C by Gauthier, just for giving an example. It's a balance between aesthetics and mechanics

Likewise for me, but beyond a certain price point (say >70K) brand history and reputation (not recognition) becomes very important to me.
