Tourque control?

Dear Patrick, did I get you right? Are you saying that that the purpose of the planetary gears in cal. 58 is to consistently deliver tourque to the movement while the watch is being wound?
Do you happen to have any further information available that would support this understanding?
I there really an issue with the torque of spring barrel driven watches during winding? The main spring is being wound by turning the inner stem within the barrel, just tightening the main spring again, while energy is delivered to the movement from the outer end of the spring via the barrel outer rim.
So during winding the main spring is being pulled into its „working“ direction. The only way you could deliver an unusual tourque to the movement would be to forcefully keep turing the crown after the main spring is fully wound.
It is a completely different thing with weight driven grandfather clocks. Here the barrel that holds the string carrying the weight needs to be turned against its operating direction while winding. This actually interrups the delivery of torque from the barrel to the movement. So we need/have a dedicated mechanism to buffer energy/torque to keep the movement running while it is wound. I do not know the English term for that mechanism. In German it is called the „Gegengesperr“.
To the best of my understanding the purpose of the planetary gears in the Senator Chronometer is to operate the power reserve display.
A long time ago I wrote an article about that here at WPS which includes videos illustrating how it works. You may find it here
Please do not misread me. I am not trying to be smarter than you or anybody else. Just trying to keep this bit of information accurate in the best WPS tradition. If you happen to have documents or any other information available that supports your understanding of the planetary gears in the Senator Chronometer then I would be most happy to learn about them.
Best regards, Martin
