'Silk' Escape maps

Ubik,

Thank you for your time and measured responses. It will be a pleasure to return the favour.

I got these RAF 'silk' escape maps about 20 years ago direct from a stores dispersal (before ebay was invented!) however if you type RAF silk escape maps into ebay now you'll find several for sale at any one time.

I'm not totally convinced they are 100% silk, (they're described as 'Fabric Maps') but they are a very crisp heavyweight material with that lovely 1950's British aeroplane cockpit smell. The edges seem to be treated with a type of rubber compound - to prevent fraying? A friend who served in the late 60's tells me they were much prized by wives and girlfriends for covering cushions!

I have three: Moscow 1:1,000,000 France and Spain 1:1,250,000 and France and Germany 1:1,250,000

Both maps featuring France are marked
G.S.G.S. No (Misc) 350/1A
Published by War Office. 1953
First Edition. GSGS 1953

The Moscow map is marked
Published by the War Office in 1945 and is a Fourth Edition - G.S.G.S. 1952

Predominantly white, water features in blue, other features in black and red. And of course reassuringly overstamped 'RESTRICTED' in red smile

I'll happily post photos of those very evocative colours but I am aware this is a horological forum!

PS could Graham re-transmit the email address of his friend who repairs Lemanias please? the system stripped it out.
