Horological Meandering

A lovely hooded lugs timepiece

I stumbled across the photos of this watch and immediately loved its design and dial.

I really like the way the Roman numerals and indices are cut out in the rectangular hour ring. Wonderful design, imo.

The watch is signedP. Thomas-Garnier, successor to Leroy & Fils.

Thanks to Jean-Jacques Richard's in-depth research, we know two things:

  • Leroy & Fils should not be confused with L. Leroy & Cie: this is not the brand founded by Basile-Charles Leroy in 1785, but rather the one founded by the widow and son of another watchmaker named Théodore Leroy, who was born in 1788.
  • P. Thomas-Garnier acquired Leroy & Fils in 1924.

The watch was sold at some point by Cosimo Watches, who provided the following photos:

I know that the hooded lugs design is outdated, but this retro style has charm for me.

The thick crystal is another detail coming from the past which appeals to me.

The shaped hand wound movement looks quite nice.

Finally, the watch is now part of the personal collection of @thewatcham aka the Boucheron guy:
