Horological Meandering

With lockdown, establishments closed, movement restrictions, working from home and everything else that happened this year, did it affect your buying habits or were you able to acquire the watches you wanted in spite of the difficulties?

Mostly due to the stock market crash in March instead of practical difficulties to walk through shops. >> I only bought one small 'fun' watch

But not as much as 2018. The year i went crazy.

- getting out in the countryside on the ebike - spending more time with my daughter - buying art - cleaning up & rearanging the house - planning some big home improvevements - cooking - planning travels when able to do so Not much time to think about watc... 

I bought this year a watch before the COVID19 breakout. This watch helped me staying strong during the crisis, also another watch in my collection was a fine pep up peace. You all helped me also to stay strong. My buying habits changed this year. No job, ... 

And guess what the reason they told me was? Due the Covid19 pandemic, we must save money and you are too expensive. I am waiting for the pay off money the Dutch law demands for employers who fired by reasons of economic problems. The sour fact is, i worke... 

Hopefully next year the AD will also tell me those 2 other rolex I have on order have come in! Won't hold my breath. Cheers S

Call it an addiction. I have my grail. Told myself, enough is enough. But it is so harch. I want more watches. I am struggling, what in the world i need a huge watch collection for? I wear only one watch all the time. 😩

It was the last time I went shopping in person last February. I had planned to purchase 2-3 more...a Ladymatic, Greayside and perhaps a Seamaster GMT PO. I purchased my DSOTM in Westchester NY but they have since shuttered that site so I may have to wait ...  

Now fountain pens — that is another matter — I think 5! Still waiting for a Graf von Faber Castell pen to arrive from Europe.

Saw it in the metal a week ago - very impressed. I walked home with a BB58 instead as I still need keep discipline on my consolidation efforts

I tried it on last year but the watch refused to talk to me! My latest consolidation after something that occurred today is reduce my collection to 5 watches or fewer!!

That’s going to be a tough decision as you have some really very nice pieces in your collection

either that or I am just plain ruthless!! I shall keep the Glashutte Original, Piece unique Grossmann, the Lang & Heyne Friedrich III and the Patek 7200R. More than enough to keep me happy!

That's a solid collection...and yes, from what you're letting go, ruthless is definitely up there in describing the decision!

I have been wearing it for 22 consecutive days and have noticed there is little need for too many watches. So I might quietly retire from this passion and enjoy my handful of watches.

To have a watch bring that level of satisfaction is not easy for us.

Went from 8 to 3, reworked my entire lineup. One Rolex, one AP, and one Patek, hope I can maintain this number...🤷‍♂️

And then I got them serviced by mail. Result: after much back-and-forth mailing, one runs poorly, the other not at all. That's where the matter rests, as I am not willing to mail them back and forth any more. Discouraging. I could probably get a better re...

Sold 1, and I’m in the process of letting go of 1 or 2 more in my quest for simplification. This Caravelle was the impulsive buy. Found it on eBay and I couldn’t resist the charm. This was my lucky find back in Feb. Had to sell my 5513 in order to fund it...

... but the year is not over yet! - there are two auctions in which I may bid. Put one watch on the block but it has not sold yet. Alltogether a typical year for me without a lot of influcence from the pandemic, since my buying and selling has slowed down... 

personal experience with online auctions? I often read a claimer that the quality and functionality of the offered watches are not guaranteed. Best Thomas

although I am lucky to have an important watch auction house in the city where I work so I can go and have a look before. My experience with Sotheby's has also been good. Of course, YMMV! Best Andreas

Was working on my consolidation effort....

I did the same. You just have to be careful not to accidentally sell the "wrong" watch every now and then. “Wrong” in this case means that you are going to regret the sale afterwards. Best Thomas

...the inevitable mistakes every now and then has resulted in me paying double for the same watch some years down the road. Am a lot more careful now
