The brother probably already has some favorite brands of his? If so, it feels like that should be one of the first and most important considerations?

Youre right on the chronoscope.

For something on the sportier side, for example the 70's Chronograph with steel bracelet; or the SeaQ Panorama Date, perhaps even in steel/gold (not normally a fan of two-tone, but here it works really well)

I would hesitate between the Polaris Memovox Mariner and the Chronograph Calendar. You can't go wrong with these... BUT you won't get any discount on the Memovox. They are limited in production, and there is a waiting list.

Good to know. For me it would be the memovox. Clearly because of the memovox history and versatility of the watch. This could be an only watch you dont have to take it off in all occasions.

The JLC is an interessting suggestion. It covers quite some interessting complications, useful ones.

It is very nice. In-house movement, WT and chronograph, and goes well in both black and blue! The price should be within range, and no waiting list in the UK (so far).

Does it have to be water proof to some degree? Does it have to come with bracelet?

I think, if he gets a watch, an expensive one, it should be one that he can wear on a daily basis and every activity. I would say with some waterproof degree and ideally with bracelet.

I'm really not familiar enough with Breguet to give you the best suggestion, but as a first watch I'd totally go for a "classic" of the brand....perhaps a Marine or a Classique, from what I understand of it?

Really nice gesture! The range is very interesting, and there's of course a variety of mid-tier brands that offer product which is readily available (Breguet, JLC, Parmigiani, etc. etc.). As others have suggest though, why not a Bulgari??
