Horological Meandering

Fair point. I like to keep things simple if I can. 'Collection' is a collective noun made up of multiples of something...

... I'm a newcomer to fora like this, and find it entertaining and informative. At the same time I see a sub-tongue that some collectors use that's a little different from what I'm used to.

So, for instance, I buy watches; aficionados "acquire timepieces." My watches are buys or, at most, purchases; theirs are "acquisitions." I call a watch "it"; some say "her." And so on and so forth.

I get it. We do it to build up an aura of distinction. I find it heavy-handed. When someone spends $80,000 on a watch, the extraordinary exclusivity and privilege of the deed speaks for itself. I don't think it needs to be larded up.

Just some idle thoughts not to be taken too seriously. smile
