From my own personal experience from the watches I currently own
and have owned and worn on the wrist for a good amount of time, a perfect beater for me is the forged carbon Audemars Piguet Team Alinghi w/ rubber strap. It's probably THE most comfortable watch I've ever worn. You do not have to worry about getting the watch wet as well as the strap when swimming or doing dishes. And the icing on the cake is it's a watch made by AP. If I had to choose to wear a beater watch from Tommy Bahama or a beater watch from a higher horological brand, I would always choose the latter. Does this make me a snob? Maybe it does, but that's what I would always choose.

A strong and versatile watch. I like the Rolex suggestions also, but I think that there are many circumstances in which Rolex has too high visibility. (My primary concern is theft or mugging risk.)

My most relaxing and liberating times were accompanied by a Seiko Monster Diver...
