Horological Meandering

Hijacking…

It’s fascinating: ever since this Breitling perpetual calendar entered my collection about one month ago, it has completely hijacked my wrist time. Every morning I look at the watch box, glance at a few pieces that are objectively more prestigious, more exclusive, and certainly more “serious” from a horological perspective… and then I end up strapping on the Breitling again.

Watch, Breitling, Navitimer

Watch, Breitling, Navitimer

It is nowhere near the most expensive watch I own.
It is not the watch with the most sophisticated movement.
And if we’re talking pure haute horlogerie, I have several pieces that play in a very different league.

Yet somehow, this watch keeps winning…

The reason is surprisingly simple: in the real world, where watches spend more time on wrists than under loupes, it does everything right. The dial is wonderfully legible, the proportions work, the comfort is excellent, and having a perpetual calendar quietly doing its thing in the background is immensely satisfying.

Perhaps most importantly, I never worry about wearing it. It accompanied me to some business trips recently, through airports, long days of conferences, restaurants and walking through various streets at night. I simply put it on and enjoyed it, which is probably the highest compliment one can pay a watch.

It’s one of those pieces that reminds you that collecting watches and wearing watches are sometimes two very different hobbies.

Have a wonderful Sunday, dear watch friends!

Thomas

P.S.: And tomorrow may become … interesting. If all goes according to plan, I will be picking up what is arguably the most outrageous perpetual calendar I have ever put on my wrist. The moment I saw it, resistance proved entirely futile. Stay tuned… 🙏😊
