I am sure he will change his statement
or his next generation in Patek will do that one day. As the world nutritional knowledge getting more advance, the next generation will be physically bigger than before. And so will their wirst. For example, my parent s have a small build. My dad is shorter by at least 15 cm compare to me. His wirst is smaller too. Although genes play an important part, nutrional play an even greater role. I definately eat better nutrition than my dad. That is why my wrist is bigger than his. I cant wear his watch because it look kind of small to me.
So as people's wirst are getting bigger we will need a bigger watch. I am sure Patek will get more sales by making bigger watch (at least from me...). One reason I dont get a patek is because they are too small for me and I definitely have a very limited choice out of their models.

Remember, this is coming from a brand that doesn't really make sports watches. Yes they make the Nautilus and Aquanaut, but it's not really a true sports watch IMO. Still kind of dressy. But let me say this though, once Patek produces a big hit 44mm sport...

Not coincidentally, Patek's largest mainstream watch (5070) is 42 mm . . .
Meanwhile, one of the primary reasons for the huge popularity of the 5070 is its size. The 5070 has an out-sourced movement and, IMHO, is over priced in comparison to the Vacheron Malte Chrono with the same movement (and a remarkably similar presentation)...

It is also due to habitual reasons and generation gaps. In general terms, the older generation was brought up with small watches, hence the 47mm Panerai's today are large eye sores for them. Today, the younger generation is brought up with large 42mm+ wat...
Also, baby boomers can actually read the large watches! :-)
I think they are here to stay, because they are legible for the aging population.
