Nice comparison of 36,000 vph and as low as 18,000 vph..
My apologies as i was confused between Hertz and Vibrations and rather or has been thinking in terms of vibrations per hour (vph). 1 Hz=1 Vibration. Anyways, my thoughts are for watchmakers not to compete or show their strength or prowess through producing high frequency watches rather than to invest in the materials used in the Balance Spring and the Balance wheel as these two important parts of a watch movement must be durable and must possess constant elasticity throughout the next 50 years or as long as the watch is in our possession. Moreover, i believe, a movement with a larger diameter Balance Wheel can ensure better accuracy, imo. The independents should invest in the materials used. The simpler the construction of a watch caliber is, less headache and possibly better accuracy. A high frequency needs to be supported with other elements as the wear and tear for a high frequency watch is far greater than that beating at 18,000 or 21,600 vph. A simple enamel dial with blued Breguet hands with a simpler calibre beating at low frequencies housed in a nice white gold, platinum case is just as attractive as one beating at 10 Hz, imo.
Great post!

I am comfortable knowing that there will be watchmakers able to service these "Lowly" pieces in the future, with their traditional materials (OK maybe except the DeBethune) being used, rather than having to be sent to a big brand and being held to ransom ...

Whatever is being done to advance chronometry in any direction is most welcome. Personal fetishes, however, include Independent manufacture and BIG balance wheels. The bigger the better. Can't be too big..... Your photos, as ever, are fantastic, Fx. What ...

If I may use an automotive analogy, it depends on whether you prefer a Ferrari or Rolls Royce. One demands to be driven at "maximum attack", the other invites you to take your time... "2 opposite trends" but no contradiction; I think most would agree the ...

The big brands continue into their persuit into high frequency caliber and advance material but don't stop at only producing a few top end show piece. Industralize them into mass market product like what Swatch did to the co-axial escapement. Then we can ...

I like to drive fast, but sometimes I like to drive slow. In both occasions, it gives me different feel and experience. When it comes to watches frequencies, it is the same to me. The sound of the oscillating balance wheel for high and low frequencies giv...
