Horological Meandering

The first serious watch that i bought was in yellow gold. I was in my early twenties. As i got a bit older, I started to prefer white metal watches. Predominantly steel and platinum but occasionally white gold. Into my 40s, 90% of my watches were white me...

is the combination of case color, case design and dial. The warm color of red gold allows to highlight case details in curves or different round levels in the bezel. The colder color of Pt or steel is much combined with strait lines IMHO. For white gold, ... 

Steel & White gold just as it goes under the radar often. May be yellow one day but as of now white metals. BTW, your Calatrava & the JLC are just killers... Best, mahesh.,

On one hand, as you've said, the case metal determines if I buy the watch. I wear white metals (mostly SS, sometimes WG) at my workplace as few wear RG or YG. So white metals allow me to blend in a little better, and SS is more practical. On the other han...  

I prefer titanium\'s soft grey color versus the hard white of SS. Brass/bronze gives a warmer note than SS or titanium without the bling impact of yellow or rose gold. Black gives a serious tool look, whether as a coating or ceramic. I have a disproportio...  

I would probably make one or two exceptions, for some watches like a rose gold Geophysic, or a 3417 from Patek. Or one of these LE Rose Gold Reversos. Other than that, white metal, exceptionally one or two black one, and one metal I am really fond of... T...

This topic always shows how subjectivity plays a role here and how wide is the diversity of tastes. My watches until I was maybe 30, not yet into watch making, were always considered to be in steel. The rose or yellow gold didn't interest me and concerned... 

Here's three metal choices of the same watch for your discussion, I own the RG version, but if I had the choice I'd take the YG...why, well there is just something about it that I love. Not to say I don't love the RG I own, I do love it. Then again, the W...

as I mentionned in my answer above in this post: "For white gold, I prefer when possible the Pd 210 instead of standard Pd180 as the higher concentration of Palladium looks more white as Pt". Palladium is in the same family as Platinum. usual WG case are ...

It\'s absolutely true that I find myself drifting towards a new approach on metals without consciously knowing. So true.

I like you started off with YG I still find it a bit show off but it works for certain model Rose gold works the best for vintage I feel but an old YG with a bit of tarnish and patina is the same BTW I am color blind so I find it very difficult to disting...  

I believe a watch can suit a specific type of metal, but the caveat is that this "suitability" is all in the eye of the beholder. My 2509 is in yg. I just cannot conceive that watch in any other metal looking as good. But that conception is only valid to ... 

I also prefer white metal for my watches - SS for sports watches and Platinum/WG for dress watches.
