Panerai vs. others
Tony,
I do not own a Panerai but have respect for the brand. My observation is that people that get a Panerai generally actually want a Panerai (this is somewhat less obvioius than it sounds!); meaning that it is a brand/design draw rather than a model draw. Consequently if I were in your shoes I would probably ask the to Panerai or not to Panerai question first. Given it was your first choice and two of the three new kids on the block are Panerai, perhaps that is what you want? In terms of ruggedness I would have thought that it fits the bill quite nicely (for a mechanical watch).
Good luck in your choice.
