Personally I try to keep a light hand. Sometimes posts are obviously offensive, trolling or shilling and they are locked. Very few are completely deleted. More commonly it is the intent that needs to be determined. We have many posters from diverse backgrounds, languages, ages and experiences. I do spend time PM’ing posters to clarify intent, and you will see that Moderators are generally tolerant and guiding rather than heavy-handed. We also rely on members to flush out these sort of posts. As you suggest, they usually declare themselves quickly.

Really, it takes someone with huge huevos to come in and stir things up simply because the forum doesn't have an air of controversy to begin with. Trolls go where they will get an easy rise. They have to work to do it here.
