Very interesting topic!
I suppose I am somewhere in phase 2 at the moment. I started with my Chopard LUC Chrono One (I guess PuristSPro can be called an accomplice in that case), the expanded with a 2014 Race Edition Mille Miglia and a LUC Sport 2000 in the two years that followed - so one brand. In parallel I dipped my toes into some other waters - some Grand Seiko (SBGX097 and SBGH035), some vintage (Eterna Sevenday Fast Beat, King Seiko 5245-6000 Hi Beat Special) and some less significant 'fun' experiments.
Where this goes next is difficult to say- the more I know about the topic, the larger the list of possible directions and candidates becomes. I like high frequency movements, like certain brands, but apart from that pretty eclectic for now. But let's see how I progress through the phases in the coming months and years

Themes or if you prefer guidelines... But the guideline can be large: Buying watches you like, for example. Pleasure is the best guideline.
I am just lucky to conciliate what I like with my themes. Now, the real challenge is that I like BOTH moderns and vintage. That's much more difficult than " just " liking vintage OR moderns. Best, Nicolas
