Watchmaking in France

France without a doubt is one of the most important watchmaking countries in the world, it provides Switzerland with roughly 30% of its watchmakers and management executives. Where would it be without it 😊

Some of the Best Watchmakers such as Ludovic Ballouard and Vianney Halter were born in France but now call Switzerland their home. However today we will be focusing on Watchmakers who live and work in France and their wonderful creations.

YEMA was founded in 1948 in Besançon, France. Now based in Morteau, the brand is highly regarded by watch enthusiasts for its robust tool watches designed for diving, motorsports, aviation, and military partnerships. In recent years, YEMA has shifted from using third-party movements to creating its own Calibre Manufacture Morteau (CMM) in-house movements, including impressive micro-rotor and tourbillon calibers.

Pascal Coyon represents a distinct and highly revered niche in independent haute horlogerie. Based in Bayonne, France, Coyon transitioned from a master restorer to an artisanal watchmaker. He became famous among collectors for his ChronomÚtre Series 1 and Series 2. His watches take humble, reliable base movements (like the Unitas 6498) and completely re-engineer them into spectacular, hand-finished calibers reminiscent of early 20th-century French observatory pocket watches. They feature dramatic finger bridges, snail micrometer regulators, and strict Besançon Observatory "Viper Head" chronometer certification.

Théo Auffret is a shining star of the new-generation French independents. He studied at the renowned Lycée Edgar Faure in Morteau and apprenticed under traditional watchmakers Jean-Baptiste Viot and Denis Coperchot.

Awake Watches founded in 2019 by Lilian Thibault is a French watch brand that has gained massive acclaim in modern horology by combining French creativity, premium Swiss movements, and rare, handcrafted ancestral arts. Serica was founded in Paris in 2019. The company has rapidly built a cult following among horology enthusiasts by mixing mid-century military design aesthetics with modern, robust technical specifications. Rémy Cools is a Winner of the F.P. Journe Young Talent Competition in 2018, he is widely considered one of the most gifted young watchmakers in France. Working from his workshop in the French region of Haute-Savoie, Cools makes watches almost entirely by hand using traditional machinery.

Jean-Baptiste Viot is an elite French independent master watchmaker based in Paris whose work represents a purist revival of 18th and 19th-century traditional French horology. Having spent decades in high-end restoration for legendary institutions and brands like the International Museum of Watchmaking, Vacheron Constantin, and Breguet, Viot focuses entirely on absolute serviceability, sustainability, and time-honored handcraft. He is famous for producing virtually every component by hand using paper, pencil, and a calculator rather than modern CNC machinery. Because of his painfully slow, artisanal process, his custom timepieces are legendary ghosts in the collecting world, only 8 subscription pieces plus a few prototypes of his definitive wristwatch are known to exist.

Florent Lecomte is a highly revered French independent watchmaker based in Morteau, France, who builds exquisitely finished, classical timepieces in extremely limited quantities. A former industrial product designer, Lecomte spent years teaching mechanical watchmaking and complications at the prestigious Lycée Edgar Faure (where he taught other rising stars like Théo Auffret and Rémy Cools) before launching his own watch brand during the 2020 lockdowns.

Baltic, Space One, Nivada Grenchen: The connection between Baltic, SpaceOne, and Nivada Grenchen centers entirely on Guillaume Laidet. In 2021, Étienne Malec (founder of Baltic) hosted a meetup for French watchmakers at Baltic’s Paris headquarters. At this event, Guillaume Laidet (the entrepreneur behind Nivada Grenchen and Vulcain) met ThĂ©o Auffret (an F.P. Journe prize-winning watchmaker). That chance meeting inspired Laidet and Auffret to join forces and launch SpaceOne, a brand dedicated to making futuristic, high-complication, space-age watches affordable. Five years later, the friends united their brands to release the Seconde Majeure, blending Baltic’s vintage 1960s proportions with SpaceOne’s deconstructed architectural mechanics.

Trilobe is an independent, luxury French watch brand founded in 2018 by Gautier Massonneau. The brand is famous for completely abandoning traditional watch hands. The duo works together to turn Brette's computer-aided designs (CAD) and visions into tangible, perfectly functioning, micro-mechanical works of art.

ALTO Watches was founded in 2024 by former Audemars Piguet marketer Thibaud Guittard. The independent French-Swiss watchmaker officially debuted in May 2024 with its inaugural timepiece, the avant-garde ART 01 model. The brand approaches watchmaking as a contemporary art form, heavily influenced by 1970s "wedge-shaped" concept cars (like the Lancia Stratos HF Zero and Ferrari Modulo), the cinema of Christopher Nolan, and brutalist architecture. The watches are powered by the bespoke Calibre A01, a highly architectural, automatic micro-rotor movement. The movement was conceived by watch designer Barth Nussbaumer and exclusively developed and manufactured by the independent Swiss movement specialist Le Cercle des Horlogers in La Chaux-de-Fonds.

GUSTAVE & CIE is an independent French microbrand known for its minimalist single-hand watches. Founded in 2014 by university friends Guillaume Rémond and Timothée Barbier, the brand designs timepieces in Paris and assembles them in Besançon, the historic capital of French watchmaking.

Rather than pointing outward like traditional hands, they frame the numbers and overlap poetically to create a shifting, kinetic work of art across the dial.

Eska Watches has been revived, spearheading its comeback via a highly successful Kickstarter campaign. Originally founded in Switzerland in 1918 by Silvan Kocher, the brand fell victim to the Quartz Crisis and closed in the late 1980s. It was resurrected by watch enthusiasts Christophe Chevreton and Sinicha Knezevic in 2024, who are now assembling the timepieces in France.
