Horological Meandering

Well, I don't know about sweaters...

... to me the most authentic are those which have been knitted for me with love smile

Otherwise I think the rest of your points are very well taken.  Interesting points about some marketing approaches being at odds with the "authenticity" of the brand.

Of course, it is easier for us to come up with various arguments or justifications as to why we buy expensive watches (regardless of "expensive" means to the individual) than to acknowledge that in many of these cases there is significant conspicuous consumption.  True, only a very small number of people will recognize a horological masterpiece for what it is...  but isn't knowing that part of the joy of ownership?

The motivators for our behavior of buying these expensive, fascinating machines are many and complex.  Teasing apart what really drives us is not simple, no matter how much introspection is involved.  In my own case, I'm trying not to overthink it.  There are some watch brands that I like, and some not.  Brand history and technology are interesting to me, but are not going to get me to like a watch that is otherwise unappealing.  Guess I'm not seeking authenticity;  I'm seeking something that is fun, beautiful, and makes me smile.  Wow.  That last point opens up a much bigger world than watches smilesmile
