Horological Meandering

When accuracy counts...

Not haute horlogerie by any means, but a focus on accuracy rather than finissage. This is a Zodiac caliber 86 from about 1968, with 5-Hz high-beat escapement and Triovis regulator (before servicing). The watch was warranted to run within "a minute a month", which is +/1 two seconds a day on average. The high-beat design was a joint development of the Community of Precision Watchmaking, founded in 1957 at the prompting of Charles Blum of Ebel, and including many companies, but most notably Girard-Perregaux, Zodiac, Doxa, Favre-Leuba, and Eberhard. Those five companies are also credited with jointly developing the autowinder for the A. Schild 1687/1688 hand-wind movement, which was of course the base ebauche for this Zodiac as well as for many Girard-Perregaux calibers. It was also the base caliber, in both hand-wind and automatic versions, for the GP high-beat chronometers of the late 60's. GP was first to market with a high-beat version, but the other members of the Community of Precision Watchmaking followed suit within two or three years.

Notice the dimples on the rim of the one-piece Glucydur balance wheel. That was a product of hand-poising.
