Your point about the necessity of the thick case for the movement is spot on.
Both brands put a lot of effort into movement architecture-depth; and that translates to more height than you would find in a typical dress watch. Again, I think this is part of the Teutonic aesthetic.

The most off putting thing for me of the Breguet is its straight lugs which makes the watch wear larger than it should even at 38mm. The RW Smith I shall reserve my verdict until 2020! But you are right, I have this awful habit of wanting the best of ever...
