Hublot Big Bang All Black Sugar Skull

I received a pleasant surprise during Geneva Watch Week when I was shown a new Big Bang which had gone under the radar since its limited release into the Mexican market at the end of last year, aptly this sweet pieces is named the Big Bang All Black Sugar Skull (Ref 311.CQ.1110.VR.FDK15).

Personally, I am a big fan of skull watches and was disappointed when the Broderie collection was not available in a larger size when it was released last year, I honestly could have seen myself wearing a version of the all black Broderie collection without the diamonds.

For a more masculine release, Hublot has taken their normal 44mm Big Bang and in a good way have used their trademark all black case with carbon fibre bezel.  However, this watch is far more than just the standard all black as the first thing you notice is the matt/gloss dial which at a glance did not strike me as being a skull pattern!  It was actually only a closer inspection that I could see the skull, I am liking this more (its not always positive to have a skull on your wrist during meetings or at formal events) and also the design was very 'Día de Muertos' which I find so much more interesting than just another basic skull outline.

So far a winner and if the all black case and skull design were not enough, the main selling point (to me at least) on this watch which is the bezel!  The carbon bezel has been etched with a pattern which compliments the dial and from memory is the first bezel I have seen like this.  This gives the bezel a real contrast when in the light between the matt carbon pattern and the etched part which is slightly glossy, which plays nicely against the dial with the high gloss skull.  As with all of at the all black Hublot range, it is not ideal to read the time and is a total nightmare when in a low lit room or at night, but that is when your cell phone is easily used.

The final touch and not to my preference is a leather strap also embossed with the skull theme, I find this a little feminine for my taste and would prefer a normal plain strap or rubber strap.   However we do see ladies wearing bigger watches so maybe this would appeal to them.

What do you think?
