Independents

Easier to discuss than decide

I have trouble settling on five, to be honest. It becomes an easier question if resale value is your objective proxy for overall brand strength.

Dufour, Voutilainen, Journe and (Roger) Smith are sure to show up as consensus picks. Journe isn’t touching Dufour on resale though.

Would I want a Dufour Simplicity over a Greubel Forsey Inclined Tourbillon, if resale is not a concern? Depends on my mood when I answer the question.

If you include recently deceased, Daniels gets his own tier as a near-unanimous pick. Mostly because he also wrote a few great watchmaking books and books sell the brand. Right?

Rexhep Rexhepi (Akrivia) went from rising star to rockstar upon releasing his outstanding chronometer. Is having an easy-on-the-eyes time only watch a requisite for a top five ranking? You might say no, but I’m assuming the consensus will say yes.

Some of the very successful brands that emphasize non-traditional pieces like MB&F, Greubel Forsey, Urwerk and DeBethune won’t make the consensus top five because their unique designs aren’t to everyone’s taste.

What of Beat Haldimann? Absolutely superb finishing on his time-only watches and a double tourbillon for good measure. Doesn’t seem to be interested in being a big name though. Vianney Halter? Reputed to be ahead of his time, but not so popular today.

We could develop a set of objective criteria to come up with ordinal rankings, but I feel that numerical scoring is not in the spirit of independent watchmaking. Neither is the discussion of money, so they should all be available on complementary loan for those with the imagination to imagine it so.
