If the old painted scrolls I've seen are any indication, that silk will be pure white LONG after the rest of the metal has darkened.

As for the "english frosted finish", I have no solid research to back this up, but every watch I've seen from before the early 18th century had that same finish.  In general, English watchmakers tended to be EXTREMELY conservative, to whit they were making key-wound fusee watches on the eve of WWI.  I wouldn't be surprised if we think of it as English because they were doing it long after everyone else moved onto more modern/decorative finishes.  It probably doesn't hurt that George Daniels used it too wink
