Hello dear Patrick! Thank you so much for your kind reply and it is so nice to talk about Fountain Pens with you in addition to about watches. Interesting to know you have been collecting...
... since so long and even before taking watch collecting like me.
I read your comments about your preferences with much interest. The Montblancs are great pens indeed. I own many of them too, including some vintage ones, but I don´t write too much with my vintages I must confess. Some vintage pens are too fragile and this happens with almost all vintage pens.
I like Montblancs so much. They exude Quality in their making. The 149 is a great pen, a bit large for long time writing. The 146 Le Grand is the ideal size. I love the 146 so much.
Both Lamy and Rotring make or made superb pens but of course not same quality and price.
Have you tried the Lamy 2000? It´s a true classic. If you haven´t you should try it.
I prefer the regular "plastic" ("Makrolon") version. The all steel one is much beautiful, but a little too heavy and worst: it slips in your fingers while writing. Very annoying for me.
(I own both though).
Regarding Japanese instruments. You won´t regret to explore this Different World of pens. And please don´t think that all Japanese pens are too big. Brands like Nakaya and Sailor and even Namiki make both Big, medium and small pens. Sailor excells in the quality and variants of their nibs,
Also if you like finer nibs must remember that Japanese have them: as a matter of fact they are finer than European and USA brands at same point with; e.g. a Japanese M tends to be near an European F . And a Japanese F is finer tan an European F. This is great for you as you said that you like finer nibs.
Sailor offers many specialized nibs some of them suitable for Asian writing. Which sometimes are not so suitable for occidental writing and not as smooth as German pens.
Have you tried "Music" nibs? They are awesome nibs!!
Finally, I´m very fond of German Pelikan pens. The Souveran line is exquisite and they come in several sizes to choose: the 1000 is a BIG BIG pen. Extrordinary but too large for daily use I feel. But you can find the same quality and a more comfortable pen in the 800/600 line or if you like smaller size the 400.
It´s my big pleasure to share/exchange thoughts and experience with you dear Patrick! I´m also happy to have another pen lover here! Thank you again for your great post!
Let´s enjoy our pens and watches!
Best cordial regards, Abel
