But the definition of independent is nowadays close to meaningless. The main shareholder is Vartan Sirmakes, a descendant of an Armenian jewelry family, born in Istanbul.
He was a co-founder of the brand from the very beginning and as jeweler previously supplied the likes of Ebel and Cartier, as well as manufactured cases and bracelets for the likes of Daniel Roth.
He is also the owner of two football clubs, one in Yerevan in Armenia, one in the canton of Lausanne in Switzerland, a major shareholder in the two principal banks in Armenia, a former honorary Armenian consul in Marsellie in France and supposedly the main shareholder of the Ararat brand of cognac (Armenia is the one exception to the French locality rule and can continue calling its brandies cognac officially), as well as of Armenia’s caviar production.
All of which means you will most likely not see any Azeris with a Franck Muller on their wrists 😉
