... true spirit. Kari is an amazing individual. It is almost hard to understand how a man with such over-the-top talents stays so humble and grounded. When I spent some time with him in Basel, it was clear that Kari was the horologist all others looked to... and up to. He brought me over to the guy that makes watches out of wood. You could see that man's eyes well up because it was Kari admiring his work. He brought me over to Romain Gauthier's booth to get an overview of the Logical One. You could definitely feel the nervousness of the master watchmaker who constructed the Logical One while in the presence of the true master.
I have seen this before - not amongst watchmakers, but between musicians, and guitarists in particular. The former lead guitarist of the rock band Toto - Steve Lukather - is a guy I have known since high school. He is far and away one of the most talented musician/guitarists I have had the pleasure of knowing for the better part of my life. But I can tell you this... there is one guy that makes "Luke" crap his pants - Jeff Beck. When Beck is around, Steve doesn't even want to look at his guitar, let alone much play it. When Jeff is close by, the look on Steve's face is not unlike that of the guy that makes watches out of wood, or the guy that constructed The Logical One when Kari Voutilainen is "on stage". After all, isn't Kari just another kind of rock star?
