It seems like a fair few among the WPS community have dipped a toe. It's evident that a great deal of effort has gone into its design - from conception through build to quality assurance. The end result is a classical, aesthetic treat at an entirely acces...

My point is specific to a mechaquartz watch like this and reactions to them. We observe some enthusiasts spending a disproportionate amount of time and energy bemoaning the use of mechaquartz, to the extent that it risks missing the point of the watch its... 

Some photos on Instagram, some blog reviews, a pinch of hype and that's it. I'm glad you like it, but whether I can't even really appreciate the Seiko spring drive, you can guess that a quartz doesn't attract me at all. Aesthetic and mechanics are insepar... 

than making a movement with the same inspiration

The watch pictured above a humble mechaquartz so direct comparisons can be made for (a) and (b). For (c) it is likely superior to any mechanical watch in terms of timekeeping accuracy, while being plain to look at. It offers performance if not soul.

I only ask because as I’m sure you know the SD is totally mechanically driven - no batteries in sight.

Though the precision and quality is remarkable, it's not my cup of tea. Anyway is by far better than any quartz movement, there's no competition between the 2 technologies

This is where the confusion arises because the word quartz is associated with a battery powered cheap watch. Yes the SD utilises a quartz Crystal as part of the regulation process but that is powered by the mechanical action rather than requiring an addit... 

and that’s the only thing a Spring Drive and a quartz movement have in common. To call the SD a hybrid isn’t accurate or fair since a quartz movement is powered by a battery and a stepper motor where an SD is powered by a conventional mainspring and gear ... 

And it's well-constructed, case-wise. And it isn't pretending to be anything it's not. I don't think it deserves the criticism it's getting here. Simple and very inexpensive; good-looking. That's it.
