Independents

Wow!

I've only been collecting the past 25 years.  It seems you have been collecting for much longer than I have!  I too started with fountain pen collecting before watch collecting and started appreciating them much like how you did.

I started very much with German fountain pens.  Pretty much exclusively Montblanc pens - the Montblanc LeGrand 146 was my first fountain pen 25+ years ago.  I still enjoy it very much!  From there, I tried cheaper pens, such as the Rotring and Lamy, but really liked the smoothness of the Montblanc.  The Rotring was also quite smooth (but not as smooth as a Montblanc) and the Lamy was a little scratchy.

Despite collecting German pens for 25+ years, I never really thought about branching out to Japanese pens.  I always found them fascinating, but the pens were so large (Namiki Emperor) that I never thought that they were usable.  BUT!  I'm pleased to say that I've just placed the order for my first Japanese pen, and I'm looking forward to receiving it.  It is a new world and I'm mainly looking forward to experiencing the super smooth but finer nibs.

Thank YOU for sharing your thoughts and experience surrounding fountain pens!  So glad to have another pen appreciator!
