Swimming with JLC with 5 bar WR
Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone has experience with JLC watches with 5 bar WR and actually going into the water? I’ve seen on their website that 5 bar should allow entry into water which seems positive but obviously there are some caveats and keen ...
One colleague of mine said you should never swim with any watch. (But he is really old school watchmaker).
I drive him mad by taking my 46 year old datejust swimming and in the shower. I even scuba dived with it once (that went well but I guess I was testing my luck that day).
Just a personal opinion, but I would not do it.
Without a screw-in crown I think there is too much risk. I may be "all wet" in my thinking but I would keep it dry.
The screw in crown does not provide extra water resistance in itself
It is there to keep the crown in place. The screw threads do not give any extra water tightness.
Of course they do, and the gasket keeps water from entering. The screw in function is to keep the crown in place.
The screw-in function adds security by helping to keep the crown in place (or rather, securing that it is not pulled out).

I am definitely in the camp of using my watches to the greatest extent possible (incl. swimming where suitable). Also, my question stems from the fact that I like classic designs and the prospect of having a classy JLC model that can also go in the water ...
For no rational reason whatsoever, I won't enter the water wearing anything with less than 10 bar of water resistance.
A screw-down crown may not help with water resistance (per above), but it sure boosts my confidence! ;-)
On the other hand, there was another watch forum where it turned out a man was swimming/showering with his Breguet classique!
3 atm wr and on a bracelet. No problems, he was up for a 5 year service and had posted asking about that... I wouldn't recommend following in his footsteps!

50m WR is dress watch territory. It can take a quick submerge or surface moisture but I would never swim with it. 100m is the absolute minimum for swimming.
