It makes perfect sense...
...to me anyway. 
Amortising the cost of larger purchases always seem easier when you break it down to the transactional level (number of wears, photos, uses, etc).
One thing that I love about DSLRs is that good glass (lenses) never becomes obsolete - although this could be indirectly attributed to the above point and longer period in which to lower the 'per transaction cost'.

No, It is rather what I'd call an accident of production.
Around 5 NSAs came witrh the sterile dial and sapphire. I asked JLC to get me one of these unsigned dials, et voilà. Being a JLC moderator has its privilege, from time to time. Best, Nicolas

No, the Aldao came with a sterile dial and a sapphire engraved with the JLC name.
The Aldao is exactly the same than the proto... Here nothing is engraved nowhere, nor on the dial, nor on the sapphire. It is not a proto, nor a limited deries, it is just an accident. For the benefit of 5 of us... Best, Nicolas
