mixed feeling actually...
...we all have been waiting and waiting for the day of this reissued Geophysic to come! was so happy to see this day being come.
however, it did come but the feeling has been mixed for me!
as like most Geophysic fans, most striking issue to us is the automatic movement?! honestly i can't accept the reason you explained why MJLC used automatic instead manual for this reissued watch.
to our best understanding, two main known and critical characteristics of this Geophysic are 1) superb accurate movement and 2) anti-magnetic!
if the reissued or even re-edition Geophysic can strengthen or enhance or improve these two features, then i would probably feel much better with it, like other brands, Omega did improve their reissued watch for example to use new anti-magnetic materials.
another key feature of this Geophysic is the globe logo on the case back, in your report case back pic was absent, not sure such pic will be available soon?
in any case, i understand as hard core jlc fans, at the end, we will still live with it and even love the reissued one more. but initially, really felt mixed feeling.

That is a tough decision, the choice between the Pt and the SS.
I would say both, as they are very, deeply different. I woud say stainless steel, if only one is possible, because it is a toolwatch. And it is more coherent to own a toolwatch in stainless steel than in platinum. But the platinum has a lot of charm, too....
