You're pictures clearly display the beauty of the 127! I agree, the ideal is a 372 AND 127--both are icons.
I'm always struck by how Panerai fans (myself very much included) feel the need to create personal rules or definitions of "purity" to guide their collecting. I believe it's related to the brand's inconsistency and endless variations--the only way to decide which model to buy is by focusing on the minutiae. I love everything about the 127 but the "1950." I can fixate on that small detail because the 217 exists without it. And by advocating for the 217, I distinguish myself from other Panerai collectors--wow, this took a philosophical turn. 😳
It's a idea related to mimesis and how our desires or formed and influenced by others. I recommend the book "Wanting: The Power of Mimetic Desire in Everyday Life" by Luke Burgis. It's really applicable to modern watch collecting and comment forums (Hodinkee comments being a notorious example).

As for "better than the 127," we'll have to see what the Purists have to say. I'm partial to the PAM217 myself.
I agree with the "1950" text on the 127.
I'm surprised that gets a pass with the less-is-more Panerai fans. "Pure" is one of the reasons the 217 is on the short list for next watch.
