311 will be a classic
I have also wondered why the 311 is not popular.
But to me the 275, 311, and 317 represent a crucial turning point for Panerai. To my knowledge, there were no other PAMs before these that offered so much at that price point. These pieces possess plenty of DNA, while also offering real horological might with truly functional complications beautifully backed into a wearable 44mm 1930s case. Awesome! I see them as the first PAMs that offered a truly perfect balance of traditional and modern Panerai.
But perhaps the pricing is the reason. Most watch buyers wont spend well over $20k on a watch not made in a precious metal or with such understated, almost muted qualities these pieces offer. But they are in fact terrific buys for all that you get, as compared to AP, Patek, VC, etc.
So to me, these (311 and 317 especially) are highly collectible and will receive serious respect over the long term. Grab one while you can. I proudly own a 311 and will add a 317 as well, as my most special PAMs that to me offer far more bang for the buck than most other PAMs today.
