Officine Panerai

Anthony, first let me say that I hope you are right, and...

.... that the 339s all end up with collectors or other Panerai enthousiasts rather than flippers.

But something tells me the 339 will still be a hot item and still a watch that flippers would like to make a bet on.

Here's why:

Firstly because 386s wont hit the street for a long time and even if so, the annual production will likely be around 500 pcs only, so getting your hands early on a 339 is still great

Secondly, the 339 is 47mm, a size that touches the heart of many Pam collectors, much more than 44mm. Yes, there will be a 44mm composite watch, but same can be said of a lot of 44mm steel luminors being around whereas the 47mm versions (ie 127 and 217) command big premiums (I know that the 127 and 217s can not really be compared directly with the current Luminor line-up in terms of historic relevance, but the 127 and 217s are icons of modern day Pams and in a way I think 339 is the same).

In addition: the Marina Militare wording on the 339, perhaps the last time on a Panerai watch...

But, I think, in line with what you stated, that the 386 will indeed have a 'normalizing' effect on the market. There will be a number of people that, if given the choice, will prefer a 44mm versus a 47mm, reducing the demand for the 339. Similarly, there will be people that prefer a Luminor composite over a Radiomir composite, again reducing the demand for the 339. And lastly there will be people that simply do not want to pay a premium for a limited edition, so when given the choice they will go for regular production.

Just reading what I wrote here above, and my thought actually is that I hope there will be something to please all of us!! One big happy family with lots of smiling faces (and composite Panerai's around the wrists) smile
