With 297 you will have the option of going bracelet or strap while with 88 you're stuck w/ strap, at least from strictly OEM's point of view. Having said that, do you like the bracelet on the 297? Personally I think it's far inferior to the original design as you can find on 161 so perhaps it's worth taking a look at it instead?
Obviously changing strap is part of the culture of owning Panerai so you can't go wrong w/ the classic 88.

I dont really like the look of 297 bracelet. The 161 bracelet, IMO, defines Panerai bracelet. Thats what I remembered the most when I first fell in love with Panerai I like the 88 dial very much. To me, it seems that the 297/161 dials lack something... ot...
