The 914 started out as a VW to replace their aging Karmann Ghia coupé but they quickly realized they could not develop the car on their own. Ferry Porsche wanted a cheaper car for younger people who could not afford a 912. So, eventually, they decided to share the basic car and sell it as a VW-Porsche in Europe and as a Porsche in the US. The VW model only sold as a 4-cylinder model while Porsche developed the 914-6 at a later stage and sold it as a Porsche only. As such, many people do not consider the 914 as a pure Porsche. I think this is what Sergio was referring to.
