Several commenters stated that many of the references look the same, but somehow and for some reason, I am currently intrigued by collecting some of the classic 47mm references, having acquired four of such references (368, 587, 662 and 687) in the past two months. I was in the Panerai boutique in New York yesterday and was disappointed they didn’t have a 5218 on display. The sales associate told me they’ve only received one piece so far and that a total of only 15 have been released so far. It seems like a few WPS members already have a 5218, so they must be among the lucky view who seem to be acquiring the majority of the already released pieces. The 5218 is a very cool watch and when some of the hype dies down a bit and they become more available, I could definitely see owning one in my future! Some thoughts on the new Panerai Luminor Marina Militare PAM 5218.
At the " reissue game", Panerai is very good. We can even say that when they revisit their past, they often do it in a very good way. There are a lot of references which are revisiting the past. The 372, the 587, the 662, the 127, the 21, the Mare Nostrum...

...at the reissue game, but how hard can it be for them? Some feel all their watches look the same 🤣 On serious note, this one is quite attractive, only unsure how will owners of the originals feel with such reissues.

That really is a stunning looking old school Panerai.
It really does have a very strong vintage vibe and look to it which I think is a good thing and thank you for your post that goes into all the small details about this watch. IMO the choice of DLC over PVD makes sense as the DLC is a newer and better tech...

It's not always about the competition
In this case, the 5218 is practically a base Luminor with a DLC coated case and a slightly fancier dial. Base Luminor with P6000 is $5900 5218 with P6000 is $8800 Is the 5218 worth an increase of $2900 over the base? I have a hard time answering yes.
