Hi Thomas, A fingernail will not be the right tool to open this case I guess as you may hurt yourself seriously on the sharp edge of the case back if you slip by accident... A good thin knife blade will work perfectly... if you are able to open wrist watc...

...as some cases of this type have screw-on backs rather than snap-off ones. If so, then you may damage the case by trying to open it with your fingernail. Not to mention the damage to your fingernail. Let a watchmaker do the job properly, gatorcpa

The black and white dial is particularly attractive, and the condition looks very good. As you have said, it is most likely based on a variant of cal 38.5. This calibre was first introduced in 1933, and variants of it were still in use until the mid 1960'...
