5196P vs 5134P battle
Was discussing with a friend recently as he is looking for a dressy watch... discussion got to debate between these two.
Similarities:
- both cal. 215
- both platinum
- both 37mm
- both essentially time only (as travel time can be “hidden” from view)
- both similar pricing
Differences:
- dial on 5196 more interesting finishing and applied Breguet indices are quite special
- 5196 wears larger on the wrist due to thinner bezel and thinner profile
- 5134 comes on deployant buckle while 5196 on pin buckle
Personally I find the choice rather difficult. I suspect the 5196 has a wider following here as it is a more classical Patek in the traditional sense. Perhaps it is the more obvious choice. 5134 is a somewhat forgotten reference that is rarely surfacing publicly. However I find this version with stick indices and superb stealth complication (which is quite useful and easy to operate) quite cool... tough call for me as both can be argued in favor of... would love to know what the forum votes in this little battle...

Personally, the 5134p as it has a deployant and has a dual time zone mechanism. 👍🏼

Personally I’ll go for 5196P...
It is the essence of Calatrava - the best connect to 96 which emphasizes elegance & understatement. There are very less 36/37mm dress watches in offer to explore...even most modern calatrava are growing in size consistently 🤐 Best, Mahesh.,

The problem of the 5134 is the 5110. The 5110 killed it, in my opinion. As a travel time cannot compete with a world time. One is an icon, the other is a nice watch. Not the same.
While the 5196P doesn't have this problem. Best, Nicolas

I see your point but I would say the 5110 and 5134 are quite different still... personally I would find the travel time more useful in a practical sense when traveling time zones whereas the word time is a more romantic view of the world... in my opinion ...

Find this pic to be quite a good one of the underdog... sober, sharp, minimalist, very stylish in my view. Especially when the complication is hidden and it looks like a 3 handed with 24h indicator only... ...
5139 has a different vibe..like an outsider. It gets my vote although I hardly ever use a world time or travel time..
I simply do the math automatically when travelling😉

Under this legal framework the court has declared the typo to be unintentional and intent has been recognized as such
Personally I find the 5134 really really ugly.
On the contrary the 5196 is one of my favourite modern patek: sector dial and breguet numbers means an heavy vintage inspiration.

5134 is surely a nice and practical watch but... 5196 gets my vote with no hesitation
5196 has much more PP DNA, is linked to PP history, has a wonderful classy and timeless design while the design of 5134 is a bit dated imho. Let’s wait for the final result of the battle

5134P for hands, crown guards, bezel, and function
Always on the fence about 5134P and ultimately chose 5107P, but never found the 5196P as compelling because of thin bezel, shape of hands, and Breguet numerals. Park

Not sure I am ready to acknowledge this as a vote to the 5196P... However I can sympathize with your feeling. A 5196P with a more interesting movement would really bring it up a notch....

Considering PPP ...
... which obviously stands for "Patek Philippe Purity" in this special case, the 5196P. For pure raw-power functionality, 5134P. I have a 5196 but I keep thinking about adding a simple 5134 for business travel. I like the discrete class of the 5134's size...

As several have mentioned here, one is an excellent watch, the other is an icon.
I don‘t own a PP and I‘d go for the 5196 as it is the quintessential time-only calatrava. It‘d be the logical thing to do to start a PP collection. On the other hand, if I already did own a couple of Calatravas, Or if I didn‘t want to have a watch that ma...

At this point I think it is fair to say we have crowned a winner in this battle. At first it was a close race but by the time we got halfway the classic icon started finding momentum and pulled away.... 13-5 win. Seem like an easy victory but battle felt ...
