Classic chronograph vs modern chronograph - different priorities
Not just a matter of value, but also client expectation. Basically the Patek 5960 has a vertical clutch automatic chronograph movement, designed to offer superior technical performance and be easier to assemble and service.
The Patek 5270 has a manual wind movement with a horizontal chronograph clutch. With this movement, the aesthetics and finishing are prioritized over the cost of the movement.
A lot of people who buy high end chronographs don't prioritize the aesthetics of the movement, beyond a certain point. So it seems everyone in the Holy Trinity now offers at least two series chronograph movements: one for the movement people and one for the normal people who usually care more about the front of the watch.
Patek and Vacheron also both have a third level of chronograph movement, the ultra-thin rattrapante models (e.g. CHR 27-525 PS). These are the movements that permit Patek and Vacheron to fancy themselves as the finest manufacturers in Geneva.
