Today I was watching a video of the concert in homage to George Harrison at Royal Albert Hall in 2002. Eric Clapton was wearing a Patek chronograph on a black strap. Once I noticed the watch on his wrist that’s all I could see for the rest of the concert. What a classy, elegant, just perfect watch. The quintessence of tastefulness, subdued refinement and propriety. The yellow gold, the black strap, the size, the way the watch wrapped around his wrist was just perfect. A watch for a statesman, a renown scientist, a great literary figure. And then I thought: There isn’t a single watch like that in today’s PP catalog, not a single one. What I find now are watches for rappers, corrupt third world politicians, oligarchs, and nouveau rich. I guess the Stern third generation has a new view of the people they want to cater to.
