I'd pick 5040 (breguet nos.) though ...
I find both of them very "interesting" coz I'm so interested in watches! Save the different functions of the two watches, both of them look splendid and classic and I deem both of them icons of Patek. For a Patek lover, he can spot your 5396/5040 from meters away! Choose the one that appeals to you, not the one to your AD. He's not interested in Pateks, but your $$$$.
I'd choose 5040 because of its case and its wonderful look on the wrist (don't you agree it looks much nicer on the wrist than in pics., but for 5396, quite the opposite.). For 5040, black dial with Breguet numerals!!
