Just a few thoughts ...
The production is kept low for good reasons, because it helps to keep the magic and (I guess) the production costs are relatively high - especially for the bracelet and the case. The business case should be better for the more pricey watches from the Nautilus collection and sometimes it seems that those are "easier" to get. Also I guess the business case is much better for AP, if we talk about the 15202 and especially the 15400.
Lots of guessing, I know. But we probably will never get the FULL picture, for good reasons.

I got from AP their anniversary book "Royal Oak" from 2012. In that book they state that in some markets Royal Oak is a better known brand than Audemars Piguet. Best, Kari

I would get it before all of those go to the safes of collectors. My feeling is that people do not yet fully understand that 3712 is the last Nautilus constructed according to Gerald Genta's original design. Best, Kari

It's just a case of Patek keeping the production low, like people already mentioned, it makes you want it more, maintains the exclusivity, and Patek wants you to buy the higher end model where margin is better. And Thierry Stern have publicly said he does...

I have it on my wrist when writing this. I have owned several Nautilus since 2005 and I have never experienced the same as with the RO. I stop watching the case and the bracelet of the watch several times every day. The design and the balance are stunning...
