In an automatic like the 240 that powers that watch, the end of the mainspring isn't riveted to the barrel, but held in place by a bridle, designed to stay put during running, but slip to prevent the automatic mechanism from over-winding it. It's a careful bit of tuning, to get the slip right, and if it has become too "slippery", it might unwind itself and cause the symptoms you describe.
