The first one has better focus/clarity while the second one is a better balanced image....

besides the crop I also processed each for a different feel - the second is darker, with more "noise" for a more "old time" look and feel, whereas the first one is more modern, even though BW Thanks for looking and your comments. Always appreciate differe... 

Are the Spaghetti Trees out the back?

I like all the extra subjects in the picture, which still do not detract from the main subject. And you know where the "spaghetti trees" comment comes from, right?

harvested spaghetti from spaghetti trees. If you Google it I am sure you will find it; and may be able to view it. When I was a kid I thought it was real.

My memory was quite faulty. It has nothing to do with China.

From my recent novice post on the photography forum, you will know I know nothing. But intuitively, I prefer the 2nd shot, I think, because the 'work' is emphasized, whereas in the 1st, the woman is emphasized. I like the emotional interest of the work sh... 

Mostel, once knowledge and intellect take over, it's a very very long time before once gets instinct and intuition back. Savor this time... I appreciate your detailed thoughts on how the shots make you FEEL as that is the part that I can imagine and guess... 

And her face is the focal point. Also the surroundings in the second don\'t add much. The noodles the face the clothes, it\'s all there in the first

.....for me it is not about the clarity of vividness of the image, but it is about the atmosphere and "feel" of what is going on. The reflection in image 2 is a big plus for me.... the composition also feels more complete. 2...all the way.

for me, whatever that implies...) and even more by how strongly you feel about it. Yours, and Mostel's, comments actually are more consistent with my natural tendencies, which are consistent with my philosophy, "context is everything, everything is contex... 

I downloaded both image in order flip between the images without scrolling, I was trying to focus on the composition but the different contrast and tonal rendering kept grabbing my attention. I prefer the presentation of the first image but the second is ... 

I actually prefer the second image, but I can't do too much given the tonal range of the jpg as posted. In any case I will send you the results. The first image at the larger crop or the original would be fun to work with ; ). White noodles on a white tab... 

shooting through glass didn't help!

as we discussed by email, the second was more "journalistic" but deliberately in an old bw newsprint sort of way, to reinforce the point that there is still much handwork, despite the rolling and cutting machine, versus the modern "no human hands" approac... 

So I can say the first photo is more focused on the woman at work, while the second photo shows where she works. I think there's a subtle difference, both are nice

the upper photo is digital and the lower photo is analogue. I prefer the lower photo.

another 10-15% crop of the bottom and left side which will make this photo "more" complete...just IMO

On the first, the right edge of the table is too close to the edge of the frame. Also, a subject should usually remain uncentered. Although both are too close to center for me, the second seems to be more \'balanced\' by being \'unbalanced.\'

... is perfect to my eye. Provides context, a sense of the environment, and is more comfortable to view. The first reminds me a bit of close-in wrist shots of watches where it's harder to get sense of the overall look and perspective.

Also Thomas -- the reflections 'make sense' in picture two. You can sort of see where they come from.

One might want to play with reflections...
