Like PP James I also bought an 016 and I like him I traded in/sold several watches that I was not wearing to fund buying the 016. I love it. It gets regular rotation. It is unmistakably a RM but it’s under the radar, easy to wear, and really a perfect casual watch. I love the design of the case and dial, especially how the movement appears to float in the case. I know that the movement is similar to the rm010 but in this design I think it just pops.
I know that most people would go for a tonneau shaped RM. it’s what they are most known for. I had a chance to buy the RM010 and I just preferred this watch. It’s so cool in person, and it just pops. The new rm 16-2 is also really nice. This watch was immediate love, as opposed to my Daytona which took some getting used to. To me the Daytona is more shouty while this is, in its own way, more sublte. Far fewer people know what this watch is or believe it’s real, even though people know im a collector.
So I also want to address the RM haters. It’s easy to hate on RM. The watches are not classically beautiful and they are aggressive and they are culturally coded. But that does not belie the immense innovation and craftsmanship that goes into the watches. The movements are often made in connection with some of the best movement manufacturers— Vaucher. APRP, in house, with innovative materials and structures. The skeleton and open work approach has defined modern watches. I cannot overstate the role RM has had in watchmaking. Not only did he push the envelope in technical skills, but also modernized modern skeleton watches. I love skeleton watches and I love the AP RO double balance wheel— the watch that got away from me— but you don’t get that styling without RM.
Likewise, I’d recommend to most collectors that RM should not be your first watch. It may not be your second! They are great watches but you should probably start with a dress watch, a sport watch, and maybe a complication! A senior executive at McLaren once told me that they are not anybody’s first or only car, or even their third. They are somebody’s fourth or fifth. I think that’s true about RM generally speaking.
Happy to share more, but I love my 016 just as much as I love my Lange 1 or 5159j
