Always so nice to view your beutiful DRSD dear Joe...

... and an interesting issue to read about.

I feel that as usual, Marcelo Pissani gave a good answer about the "recipe" to consider a tropical dial as such: even change of color (usually black to dark brown) and not the result of a damage to the dial by water entering the watch.

I like in general a "pure" tropical, that is, one which follows Marcelo definition of an even surface and a pleasant brown hue, and your DRSD is a wonderful example, as well as Nicolas GMT.

As a general personal rule, I don´t  like dials which are sold by Vintage watch Sellers or Auction Houses as "rare and awesome" dial changes which actually are damaged dials, many times by water entrance in the watch (flooding), provoquing a color change and/or cracking (web, or tiger eye, etc).

I have told my self I would never buy a watch in such a condition... But...

As with many things I had said in loud voice to myself that I would never do, it happened to me I found a 5512 some time ago, which had a "tiger" type of dial. Yes, the very same dial I said myself I never would buy.

But somehow  I fell in love with it, price was interesting, and the final decision came when I opened the watch and viewed its movement and case interior completely pristine, convincing me that the dial condition was not the result of a bad flooding in the sea. As a matter of fact this watch is incredible accurate in spite of its age.

That gets me to another interesting and important point. That is explaining why these color changes occur, as well as patina in indexes and cracking of dials.
Of course I have read here and in other Forums and places, about failing lacquers, exposition to sun, humidity, etc. etc., but I feel never a definitive conclusion.

My final personal conclusion is that I may like or may not like a "tropical" watch, depending in each specific case. But they are a very attractive option in a collection, and some of them are truly charming, as in the examples you and Nicolas have shown.
