In the world of automobiles there are some companies that professionally modify cars such as Singer, Ruf, and others
In small supply. These cars are often highly sought after and command prices far above what the base car costs
due to the high standard and extensive reengineering that goes into these products.
In the watch world, modified watches aren’t usually refinished to standards approaching the original manufacturer and so aren’t looked
upon as kindly.
However there are exceptions, as always.
Artisans de Geneve is a company that produce limited editions using Rolex watches as a base before modification.
I must admit that I’m not usually a fan of these types of products, however when something sings to you it’s hard to resist
regardless of its origins.
The tribute to 6241 gold was produced in a limited edition of 26 pieces and when I first came across the watch on their website I was
not familiar with the high level of craftsmanship that this company puts into its products . However after taking the plunge and
receiving the watch I can tell you that their work is beyond reproach. This opinion is not just my own, it is also echoed
by all my friends who love watches and have seen it in person.
A Rolex Daytona 116508 solid gold is used
as the base watch.
The diameter is shaved down to 39.5mm.
Crown guards are removed
Gold pump pushers are created and used.
The bezel is handmade Bakelite using the
same machine from the 60s used for the vintage pieces.
Plexiglass is used instead of sapphire.
12h/6h vintage polishing incorporated.
It comes with both gold bracelet and handmade alligator strap.
The movement is a 4130 Rolex modified
with 22ct gold rotor that can be seen
through a transparent sapphire back.
It’s a fun watch that is well made and while it won’t appeal to the masses, it doesn’t have too as only 26 were produced and sold. It is now discontinued.
I just wanted to share this watch as it brings a smile to my face and in the end , that’s what watch collecting is all about.
