These watches were made for a particular market (I am not allowed to say ,sorry)
They were however deliberate and not a typo
They were commissioned by a particularly famouse client
I think I am allowed to say who but if Rolex decide against it I will ask for it
to be edited
They were made in a single batch starting in June of 66
The vi is for June
Totally unique to this substantial request
The vi was done only as Rolex for their own reason
decided not to put the logo on dial unlike the Arab crest dials
My personal opinion is because he was a prince and not a king
The commissioner of these rarities was mr Lous cephiyer

If you want to see a date in your case back, you should go for a Rolex

my hypothesis is the same as yours 66: refers to the year since it coincides with the serial numbers iv: refers to the month of production during that year of 1966
I have another theory...
.....i think it refers to teh 4th quarter...IV, but has been typo'd as VI
Oh silly me, that makes more sense because
1). I haven't seen markings on the caseback that refer to the 5,7,8...and 12 th month... 2). It's probably more efficient to write in terms of quarters...who (apart from me, lol) would write ?!
I don't think so. I don't see Rolex suddenly changing the meaning of the roman numbers.

I've seen discussions on this over the years and I think it's accepted that it was either a typo, or more likely IMO somebody having a little bit of fun in the factory!! Interesting none the less! Ross
The Typo is indeed the most probable and rational explanation.
