Rolex

Nicolas.....

.....i suspect the answer to your question could be any number of possibilities.

Firstly, my documentation shows that Rolex were lending a watch to a diver for testing in June 1971. The Sea-Dweller was, I believe, officially launched in 1971. The Mk1 lent to the diver, then, was produced much earlier than 1971. So, in this sense there is no real anomaly. However, you might ask why Rolex were still testing watches in 1971 given that they were also officially launching the Sea-Dweller at the same time. I would think that these tests were still part of the ongoing research into the watch.By 1971/2, it must have been fairly clear to Rolex from their previous test results that the watch was capable of being launched. I think one could also argue that to launch Mk2 or Mk3 dials, the production of those watches was probably quite advanced by 1971 anyway.

It should also be remembered that 1972 does not mark the end of the testing of the Sea-Dweller...indeed, much of the following 5-10 years saw further testing of the Sea-Dweller with Comex......so again, I would not find anything strange with the 1971/2 prototype testing taking place alongside the release of the watch for wide scale sale.....

Hope that answers your query.
