Well that’s very odd and unusual!
i don’t think that it’s getting eaten away. First off you should inspect that lug closely and see if there’s loss of metal thickness.
Second the serial number isn’t deeply engraved but barely laser engraved so patina will most likely cover that up and give it a disappearance effect.
Aluminum bronze used for the case is the most corrosion resistant bronze alloy unless the case was subjected to some extreme acids which is highly unlikely. Besides that it should easily withstand a millenium without problem.

My one and a half year old Tudor Black Bay Bronze looses slowly its case and reference number! The patina eats them away ... Reference number ... gone! Case number ... nearly gone! ...
Sure! Steel’s patina takes decades whereas bronze months.
